Radiology Outline

Instruction:  DAY 1

The course will begin with didactic instruction in a classroom setting. 

1.The students will get to see and feel dental radiographs and practice peeling apart radiographic films in the light and in the dark.  Students will look at the radiographs and see the differences between single films and double films.  The embossed dot will be shown.   All parts of the components of the dental radiograph will be shown and discussed. 
2.The students will have to assemble the Rinn Holders.   They will practice assembling and dissembling the Anterior, Posterior left maxillary and right mandibular, Posterior right maxillary and left mandibular, and Bitewing holders.  They will also use the Snap-A-Ray intraoral film holder.
3.Students will be introduced to the manikin and the dental laboratory. 
4.Infection control protocol will be reviewed for all aspects of dental radiology.
5.All Competency Task Forms will be reviewed with the students.  Students will be told and shown what all of their expectations and goals.
6.Developing and Processing techniques will all be reviewed hands-on


DAY 2:

1.An FMX will be taken on the manikin by the instructor.  All positions of the radiographs will be shown and reviewed in detail.
2.The students will be divided up into per instructor. Then each take an 2 FMX on a manikin while watching and learning off of one another.  Evaluation forms will be filled out together as we go.  Each student will help and critique the other students in their group. 
3.We will develop the x-rays process and mount radiographs. 
a. Each student must have taken at least 2 (Two)  full mouth periapical radiographic surveys consisting of at least 18 films each, 4 of which will be bitewings. 
b. Develop, process, and mount exposed radiographs
4.Students will continue practicing their radiographic techniques until they get at least a 75% proficiency on every competency.
5.Student will be responsible for completing 2 F.M.X. on patients as a homework assignment.

The Laboratory Final and The Clinical Experience:

  
All remaining clinical patients FMX to be taken

CRITERIA FOR SELECTING THE PROPER CLINICAL PATIENTS will be adhered to.

Clinical Experience will fulfill the objective of obtaining clinical competence in radiographic techniques:

1.Students must take a minimum of 4 full- mouth periapical surveys, consisting of at least 18 films each, 4 of which will be bitewings
2.Students must become proficient at developing, processing, and mounting exposed radiographs
3.All exposures made on humans shall be made for diagnostic purposes.  Students will need to obtain the, “PATIENT RELEASE FORM ALLOWING STUDENTS TO TAKE RADIOGRAPHS” from their patient’s prospective dentists. 

This course is worth 16 units of continued education
